Nottingham Market Square
Central Market circa. 1950's ish....very happy personal memories of the old market. My wife Ann had a Saturday job on the market as a girl, she started to work at "Middup,s" Fruit & Veg, market gardener's from Woodborough (the stall at the bottom of the pic) at the age of 13 & worked for Sam & Elsie Middup right up to when we got married in 1964... We first started courting when Ann was 14 & I was 16. I used to take her out to the pictures Saturday night's....she was always tired, worn out & smelt of potatoes...but it was still romantic & very exciting........ah....Tony.
Ray Walker : "Can remember a man walking around the market with a fox."
“Great picture, can smell the wet fish now, oh the memories, peas, mint sauce, and I loved the pet stall and Arthur the 2nd hand record man, once spent all my £3/12/6 wages there on Motown records, that someone had bought in to sell think I got about a dozen at 2/6 each or less!! That was about 1968 ish! ”
“Can anybody remember Len Parker, who had a paper + magazine stall closer to the bottom of King Edward St. Near the fish market?”
“My Aunt had a market stall selling fruit and veg and their home made Colwich cheese”
“Used to love central market, the smell of the hot peas and mint still love them, even the cockles stall, loved them”
“The shop on the corner of the Central Market was a Cake and Biscuit shop. Mum would send me there to get 1/2 pound of "Broken Biscuits". There was never 1/2 pound when I got back home.”
“Just as you went inside ........ on the left, there was a large sweet stall, and at the end of the day there was always sweets scattered all over the floor, so that's were my friend and I was most nights collecting them up and stuffing our pockets, we liked the toffee's best, but we weren’t too fussy anything would do. And to this day I still have my own teeth... ”
"The good old central market, my mum used to take me Sat morning there to Joices for a bag of broken biscuits..YUM YUM… hot peas and mussels for my dad”
“Still using a set of Swan Brand saucepans, pale blue handles very retro to day & still really good, I got them from the Pot stall on the front near the 40 bus stop. Got them for my "bottom drawer”, think they were £3/2/6, I got £3/12/6 wage.”
