Time to reflect. I have seen this photo several times over the years.
I am Joe 90 with the specs on the front row. I can’t name many Cubs in this photo. Timothy Hawley is centre back. I enjoyed this cub group from start to finish. This picture was taken in the Board School Hall in its day it was supposed to have had one of the biggest halls in the country. I remember playing British Bulldog you had to get over the line without being picked up and counting British Bulldog one two three before being dropped. I think for Health & Safety reasons this can’t be played anymore this was great fun and I can never remember anyone getting hurt. Skip Hawley ran this pack he arrived in his Austin 7 with all the equipment. I remember the Scouts picking up his car and moving it down the street his face was a picture when he came out with his arms full of equipment. I remember my last year in Cubs we had a Christmas meal one of the Cubs parents ran the chip shop between Norland Rd and Lotus St. I can’t remember the menu but we definitely had chips & soggy peas. I went to skips house on Abbey Grove he had the biggest rabbit I had ever seen a Flemish Giant. He parted with the Austin 7 and purchased a ex London Taxi, he definitely outgrew the Seven. I remember Bob a Job Week we were given a card with squares for jobs done signed off by the person who you did the job for. The people of St Ann’s were great they would find you a job even if they didn’t have one I swept paths cleaned cars did shopping cleaned steps and windowsills helped an old lady on Donkey Hill mangle her sheets. We would attend church parade once a month I think marching down the middle of St Ann’s Well Road. Good memories that last a lifetime...Richard Greenhalgh |
