- Great picture, it seemed the norm to go and view dead people as a Mark of respect, I was only about 8 when my mam took me, to visit a boy from our neighbourhood.
- Ironically, in her later years, my mam said. " When I go, I don't want limmies to do me, I don't want to be a b........ Peep show".
- So we had her done with the co op. And only close family " viewing ".
- Bless her.
Remember remember.. The 5th of November?
- I can still taste the bonfire toffee.. And see the toffee apples glistening in the sunlight, in the opened window.. Curtesy of our next door neighbour Ada Wass.
- What fun and excitement was had.. Making a guy! Very competitive time.. Who's was best? The most realistic guy we had one year was our Pete. Can't believe how still he was for sooo long.
- We pushed him in the pram down to the cattle market on Saturday morning, and outside the pubs at night. Money was pouring in. :-). Although he nearly came a cropper.. When some grebo's decided to prod him with a knife! Still he never stirred.
- We decided in future we will stick with a stuffed guy.
- Bonfires in the STREET! How good was that.. The week before we would go take a look at the built up pires. Some were magnificent.. Our jaws would drop, and we would try to outdo our neighbours. Lots of skulduggery went on.. In an attempt to reduce theirs and increase ours..
- "Bombed buildings" (as we called them) demolished areas between two streets, was our favourite spot. It was less likely to draw the attention of the fire brigade. Unlike some, in the streets.. too close to properties.
- When I am browsing antique furniture these days.. My thoughts are turned to all those dressers and tables and wardrobes and pianos, that people would drop off, to keep our fire going.
- Oh happy days.. Kids today missed something quite special there.
- I suppose everyone can remember the silly old saying ....Smell My Cheese... With a fist on the palm of your hand ready to biff someone as they came in for a sniff.
- ha ha ...Punch and Judy had a race all around the market place ,Judy stopped to tie her lace, Who do you think won the race .... HEY that hurt ...telling mam....ha ha
- See my finger see my thumb ....see my fist and you'll get some.
- I remember if you were fidgeting you were told to stop and have you got st vitus dance ooooh the sayings we had good aren't they
- Do you remember Adam and Eve and hit can’t remember all of it now does anyone else?
- Remember it now Adam and Eve and hit went down to the sea sea, Adam and eve got drowned who do you think got saved?
- Adam and Eve and hit me went down the river to bathe, Adam and Eve got drowned, who? do you think they saved ......ouch telling mam
- See my finger see my thumb see my fist and you'll get some, such simple entertainment brought tears to your eyes or developed running skills.
- One little saying I got shouted at for ....Ice-cream penny a lump
- That's the stuff to make you ....shout
- Naughty but not nasty children
- Just children being children
- Taught my great grandson that on and he got in trouble at school for it xxx
- I used to live on Clarence Street, off Carlton Road at No 2 Wray Terrace. Next to our terrace was an ice Cream Factory, think it was called 'Mancinis'? Does anyone remember this, and has anyone got any photos of it? There was an entry/drive down to the factory where the ice cream was made, and a lady called 'Mary Noble' used to sell the ice-cream from her front room, which was next door to the factory, not sure if she was related to the owners of the factory?
- Some of my relatives lived on Clarence Street and I can remember getting ice cream from someone who sat on a front step selling it, think they made it themselves, this would be 1950s
- It reminded me of Solaries, used to be in the old Central market Glasshouse St. Side near to the steps...I think the Granddaughter still runs an Ice Cream stall in the The market with in the Vic centre...luvly.... takes some licking...
- The Mancini's came from Italy and Mr Noble's wife was their daughter. In the early fifties I remember when the Korean war ended and the soldiers came home. One of them were Mrs Sersey's son and they decorated Clarence Street up and gave him a street party. The Mancini's supplied all the ice-cream it was great. Mr Noble's daughter Maria, she went to Pierrepont at the same time as myself and your sister.
Sunday school.
- In the 50s going to Sunday school was common place, and I for one enjoyed it. Most of my Sunday school years were spent with the Salvation Army. We lived on Notintone place, Sneinton road. The birthplace of the founder of the Salvation Army, William Booth. So we often saw visitors from foreign lands checking out his birthplace. Every Sunday morning as I remember, ( certainly in the summer months )the army band sung outside that house, and the sound woke us from our sleep.
- We hurried to get dressed, to follow the band down to Kingdom Hall. At the bottom of Huntingdon street where it still is today. Our Sunday school was a little nearer than Kingdom Hall. ( if I have the name right.) it was where the sneinton road Maisonettes stand today. I loved my royal blue book, which was stamped on the inside covers..every attendance. It had prayers and Sunday school songs.
- I was eventually in the "timbrells" where we shook our ribboned tambourines to familiar songs and hymns. We eventually moved Sunday school to a big house at the top of a street on Carlton road. ( name escapes me ) I particularly remember one Christmas party. What seemed to be the biggest and best Christmas tree in the world, Surrounded by presents.
- A huge table ran the length of the room. Set ready for party food..and a roaring fire, to keep out the winter chill. We walked home with our presents.. Mine was a bird cage, with an animated tweeting bird. It was magical. The Sally Ann really treated us well.
- Willoughby on the Wolds was our venue for camp. I was sick from eating elderberries. But happy times.
