Sid Wheeldon: "I remember Mr Clay Tony, my Dad always took his shoes to be Soled & Heeled to him, but I didn't know Mr Clay was Blind, Bless him he was a smashing chap I recall and a Very good Cobbler according to my old Dad we only lived not far from Dame Agnes street on Cathcart Street."

These pictures ( below) were taken some time in the early 1930s in the garden of 36 Dame Agnes Street and show my great-grandmother Elizabeth Ann (formerly Bakewell) with her second husband, George Smith, her widowed daughter Laura Lord and three of her grandchildren, Ken Bakewell (my Dad - the dark-haired boy) and Roy and Gladys Lord. Elizabeth died in the house in 1946 and Laura in 1965. Roy died suddenly in hospital a year later - I was a child, but I remember the phone call from Gladys announcing his death and my father and my grandparents travelling to Nottingham for his funeral. Gladys continued living in the house on her own until 1970 and then spent the rest of her life in Sneinton. I would love to know if anyone still remembers any of my family. Trish Gurney 10 March 2018

Charles Henry Beanland was a self-employed tailor who died in 1924. His wife died in Nottingham in 1915. Benjamin Beanland married Mabel Brinklow . Military History Beanland enlisted in Nottingham on 14/11/1916, and following training he was drafted to France on 26/02/1917. He was killed in action on 04/04/1917 at the start of the Battle of Arras. He is buried in Vadencourt British Cemetery, Maissemy (grave ref IV.A.19). HORSLEY, Henry James
Rank Stoker 1st Class Service number K/9681 Employment/Hobbies He was a carter when he joined the Royal Navy in 1910. Date of death 31 May 1916 Age at death 23 Military Unit HMS Invincible Royal Navy Military History Henry joined the Royal Navy at the age of 18 on a 12 year engagement, first date of service 30 December 1910. Henry Horsley senior attested in September 1914 giving his age as 34 years 8 months although he was probably 40 years old. He gave his occupation as town carter and address as 41 Dame Agnes Street, Nottingham. He served from 4 September 1914 to 15 October 1914 when he was discharged ‘not likely etc’ ie unable to reach the standard required of a soldier on active service. Henry served just 42 days on Home service. His body was not recovered for burial and he is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Remembered on

Horace Newstead
Nottingham-born Sgt. Horace Newstead, 32nd Battalion Australian Imperial Force, was wounded at Fromelles on 19th July 1916.
The former sleeper hewer was the son of Eliza Ann Newstead, of 70 Dame Agnes Street, St. Ann's, Nottingham. He had enlisted at Blackboy Hill, Western Australia, on 19th May 1915.
He was wounded in action again on 28th September 1917.
