George was born at Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire (near the village of Newstead) in 1889 the son of Charles Thomas a stonemason and Martha Hodson née Morley of 106 Front Street, Arnold. Previously the family had lived at 29 Turner Street St Anns Nottingham.
In the 1911 census we find George age 22 yrs and an iron cleaner who is living with his new wife Ethel 21yrs living at 40 Peas Hill Rise, Peas Hill Road, Nottingham.
