ROSE HAWLEY 1922 - 2020
It is with deep regret that I have to announce the passing of my aunt, Rose Hawley [nee Smedley] aka Captain, yesterday evening in the care home where she had been a resident for the past six months. Rose, the daughter of Horace and Miriam Smedley, was a lifetime member of St Ann's Church. She was married to Vernon Hawley, aka Skip, and they had three children Tim, Tina and Philp. Rose will be remembered by many who lived in the St Anns Well Road area, especially those who were members of the St Ann's Guides and the Rangers. Both her and Vernon, who was a Scout Leader until well into his 70s, devoted their lives to the young people of St Ann's, and ran innumerable camping trips over the years, these often being the only holiday a lot of the youngsters had. The world is a poorer place without them both. RIP Aunt Rose XX David G Smedley 27th June 2020 |

24 September 1929-April 16 2021..Our Dear Dad..
As a Family we felt that we couldn’t let Dads passing at 92, go by without a mention on the St Ann’s site.St Ann’s wasn’t apart of his life, it was the whole of it. Dad was born on Hungerhill Road, and spent his younger years living on Dame Agnes Street. As a family we lived on Leicester Street. Never wanting to move far from their roots, they moved to Sneinton, looking out at the windmill for 49 years. He loved the St Ann’s Site, in awe at the technology! He had an amazing memory and took great delight in passing on answers to posted photos, who lived where from the big red 1956 Nottingham Directory, and enjoyed the many posts over the years . He was a wealth of knowledge on everything St Ann’s , and often said his counting sheep was starting at the bus terminus, walking down to Bath Street naming all the shops and streets, along the way, then cross over at the Locarno and do the same till he got to the Wessy !! Don’t know at what point he fell asleep! Dad went to Morley school, having passed for, I think it was Bluecoat School, but sadly they couldn’t afford the school uniform, so Morley it was. He was Captain of the Football team, and a life long Forest Fan . He was taught by a very young Miss Brown at Board School, who always remembered him, and said so when she taught us! He was a keen Gardener, having 3 allotments growing and showing his Chrysanthemums. He loved watching darts and played for many years in the famed Robin Hood pub team. Mum at 93, like Dad was, is one of the few remaining oldest Sentys . Dad the story like your long life could go on, you had so many memories over a lifetime in St Ann’s, but this is your last post, and I’m the new owner of the big red book, Susan Carberry

Martin Trussler 20 April 2022
It is with the heaviest of hearts that I pass on the sad news that my brother Martin Trussler died suddenly on Wednesday the 20th April. His wife and children have asked me to post this to the St Ann’s community as we are aware that many of you knew Martin personally. Sisti, thank you for your most recent post reliving your sweet childhood memories of happy times with Martin. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandad, brother, brother in law, uncle and a great friend to so so many. His loss has left us all heartbroken.

David "Peanut" Rowbotham 13 January 2021
Hi. Folks,
Some very sad news for a lot of people on our St. Ann's Site & for many, like myself that had the privilege of knowing him.... David "Peanut" Rowbotham sadly passed away during his sleep over the week-end.
I personally had know David for the past 70 +Years, initially through the Lifeboy's & the 6th Comp. (St. Ann's) Boy's Brigade and as a life long old St. Ann's friend, we always kept in touch and prior to the current dreadful situation, used to meet up on a regular basis at the Wetherspoons in Arnold as a group of 6th. Comp. B.B. old Boy's, all sharing a mutual & enduring friendships' for over 70+years.
It sounds like a very old show biz cliché.....but probably the most apt thing I could think of saying....he was probably one of the nicest people I have ever met, kind caring, funny, mischief's who wouldn't hurt a fly....I never even heard him raise his voice let alone loose his temper.....always the same.....that was & how I will always remember him, our "Peanut” Tony.

GENERATIONS of people are preparing to say a final farewell to the "godfather of St Ann's".
James Oliver Johnstone, known as Jim, has been described as a second grandad and godfather to the young people he mentored at the King's Hall Methodist youth club.
He died peacefully in his sleep on October 11 2009 aged 93.
Those who knew him are invited to his funeral service at Wilford Hill Crematorium starting at 2.40pm on Friday.
Close friend Paul Wood, 36, who attended the youth club as a boy, said: "He was like the godfather of St Ann's – one of the best blokes you could ever meet.
"He looked after everybody and gave them advice. He always had a smile on his face and he always thought about others."
Mr Wood added that Jim would be remembered and missed by generations of people from St Ann's.

- Before retirement, Mr Johnstone worked as a telecommunications engineer, travelling the world setting up phone networks.
- He worked for King's Hall on a voluntary basis, looking after the building and playing the organ, as well as leading the youth club. He would reward the young people by taking them on trips.
- Mr Johnstone lived in Aster Road, in the house where he had lived with his parents.
- He never married and had no children of his own.
- Adrian Baker, 44, moved to Aster Road when he was 11.
- "I was a neighbour of Jim's and that's how I ended up going to the youth club," he said.
- "He was one of the first people on the new estate. They were practically building it around him. He lived on The Chase and came out of one of the old houses and into a new one.
- "He was a brilliant bloke. He would do anything for anybody. He had a heart of gold. He used to run camping trips to Devon in a King's Hall minibus.
- "He used to take us all to Skeggy. We used to pile in his car.
- "He kept a few lads on the estate out of trouble. He would talk to them and get them back on the straight and narrow.
- "Everyone knew him."
