A Pub Poem
from Jean Taylor
No ash trays, no bar towels
No jugs on show
Things change so much
Where did they go ??
Can you remember ?
When pubs were packed
Beer was cheap
And always on tap
Men delivered barrels
That weighed a ton
And Shipstone's horses
Were second to none
A drink for the barmaid
Who opened up early doors
You could hear the banter
Half a mild, what's yours ?
It was always packed
In the bar or best room
And closing time
Always came too soon
Towels on the pumps
Air blue with smoke
Landlord and Landlady
Shout "come on folks
Ain't you got,.....No home to go to ?"
Lights are going out
See you tomorrow,
Take care and ..GOODNIGHT ...........CHEERS

Today in Nottingham Post it said:
"Area that boasted 50 pubs, now set to lose one of last survivors....
The St Anns Inn

Here's something I wrote many years ago:...
Snug Prose--Public Houses
Pubs years ago seemed to be the' in thing'
There was plenty to pick and choose from
Places get demolished, and a lot of them seem to be gone
Now around the area of St Anns Well Road pubs did an evening trade
Some men had a couple of pints after work and till closing time they stayed
There was the Acorn, Adelphi, Admiral Dundas. Last orders, time gentlemen please
The Broad Oak Pool, Bricklayers Arms, The Bay Horse,
Free house but nothings for free.
There was the Chase Tavern and many a pub ending in "Arms"
Like the Cumberland, Coachmakers, Craven and Curzon. In the snug to tell a few yarns
The Dame Agnes Inn ,The Fox and The Crown, Gardeners Rest on Peas Hill Road
General Cathcart ,General Havelock, these were quite near my abode.
Garden Gate, Hero of Waterloo, King Edger, Mechanics Arms
Doesn't the Marquis of Hastings sound old!
Bitter, Stout, Shandy, all sorts of ale they sold
Barrels were delivered by Shipstones, and Home Brewery and put into the cellars
Waiting to be bought and supped by many a local feller
Napoleon, Napier and Princess Royal, Royal Marine for dominoes, cards or sing song
A piano for entertainment , fun and laughter could last all night long
Sycamore Inn, Stanley Hotel, Sir Rowland Hill at the top of our street
Easter Bonnet Parades. May Day Dos, for all kids a special treat
Scotts Greys, St Anns Well Inn, Westminster Abbey and Union Inn
This is just some of the pubs near where I come from
Which one did you go in ?
Drinks were around before the car, even cowboys propped up the bar
Glass, tankard, goblet or jar, the nearest boozer was never too far
Although the post say the Vine.....I thought that was Sneinton
my grandma worked there in the 30s

THE ADJUTANT WHITE
ADMIRAL DUNDAS
'Used to see the wrestlers in there Thursday night' - 'My mum worked behind the bar for a few years. Called Iris.' - 'Always went to the wrestling Thursday night, they always made sure the last bout finished before closing time so they could get over to the Bath Inn for the final drink of the night"
BRITANNIA INN
The Britannia was built back in 1871 to a design by Thomas Simpson, who was also the architect for Nottingham High School. It was actually quite a nice building, but that didn't save it from being demolished. As so many people remember visiting it for their steak nights when Berni Inns first made eating out fashionable in the 1960s,....Steve-Beq-Clark . . . my grandad owned the Britannia pub and the Robin Hood in his day - Nicole Hodginson
Memories from the The Britannia as a Berni Inn mid 1960's: Kay and Gordon Clark, the managers, with me and Harry Worth a well known comedian and actor at that time. Harry was dining at the Britannia after a show at the Theatre Royal. He was famous for his shop window reflection on his tv show. The Britannia has now been replaced by flats next to the Sally Army HQ at the city end of St Anns Well Rd.
