Tony-Ann Miller ......Meredith St. with the General Havelock Pub on the left, and Extons the sweet shop on the right. The white mini van was my Dad's and it was parked close to our back gate, which led to a communal back yard for the shops on the front, including ours and no. 2 Meredith St. all with out side toilets.....but that's another story.
the elderly lady with the white hat & shopping bag is walking past my Dad's old Sewing Machine shop 284....my old bedroom window at the top, looking out to the Board School...we lived here as a family from approx 1945 to 1970 when it was knocked down, as you can see it's already boarded up ready for the big hammer.... interestingly....you can also see Gina Pennacchia's old house on the corner of Bombay St. and as Bob Hope used to say.... "Thank's for the Memories" Geoff much appreciated....Tony.
This cave had a length of 8.6m and a width of 3.1m, it was previously used as a cellar, and as an air-raid shelter. This cave consisted of a narrow rectangular chamber with a barrel drop near the stair entrance. There was an emergency exit from a shaft in the centre of the cave. The cave could accomodate 30 people. (The pub was formerly the General Havelock P.H.)
the lady with the White Hat on & carrying a large brown shopping bag and walking past a shop front with a white washed window...that shop all closed down by now...was our Mam & Dads old shop “Millers Sewing Machine Shop”... and getting ready for Demolition about 1968/9 ish...Exton’s shop on the corner still open but winding down & getting ready for “The Inevitable” running there stocks down...by now “Clarke’s Baby Clothing” the next door shop had gone...the Delivery Storks had all flown away....on the other side of us “Nixon’s Furniture Shop” had long gone....a very sad time...only months away from all being knocked down...by that huge swinging ball...and all that dust..
