Advent calendars, Annuals, Advocaat, Apples,
‘An Alphabet of memories past’
Baubles, Books, Baking sets, Bows and arrows and Bikes Everything a child would like
Christmas cake, Crackers, Compendium of games, Church, Crib, Chocolate and Clothes
'Singing Christmas carols that everyone know '
Decorations, Dolls, Dinky cars, Dominoes, and Dressing up sets
‘The makings of Christmas we'll never forget'
Easels, Earrings, Eiderdowns to keep warm in bed
Fairy's, Fruit, Football, Figs, Forts, and Figures made of lead
Go carts, Guitars, Garages, and pop Gun
Holly, Hankies, Hairbrush, Hat,
Happiness was plentiful-------the saying was ‘laugh and grow fat’
Icicles, Ice cream, Inks for school,
Jewellery kits, Jingle bells, Jellies and Jotters
We'd be surprised at what Santa had got us
Kaleidoscope, Knitting sets with small balls of wool,
Ludo, Liberty bodice, Lego and Lorries to pull
Mince pies, Magic robot, play Makeup in plastic,
Nuts, Nightwear, Nation dolls, all these things were fantastic
Oranges, Ovaltine, Open doors,
Prams, Pushchairs, Pogo sticks, Post office sets, Pyjamas, Pork pies
A new Puppy could be a Christmas surprise
Quilts for the beds with eiderdowns if nights turned cold
Roller skates, Record player, Records, Reindeer, Rocking horse,
Sweets, Scooter, Skipping rope, Slippers and Santa in a Sleigh of course
Tree, Trimmings, Trifle, Turkey, Toy Telephones, Tambourine, and Torch.
When it's dark you can shine it in the porch
Umbrella, Underwear,
Varnish for nails
Washing sets, Wreaths,
Xylaphone
Yule logs,
Zoo animal play sets ......it's all a mystery! What will we get?
Lots of things I don't mention; there's oh so many things
But we are going to be happy, Whatever Santa brings
‘An Alphabet of memories past’
Baubles, Books, Baking sets, Bows and arrows and Bikes Everything a child would like

The Arboretum it's a lovely place I know
And the Brewhouse Yard with things of years ago
The Castle stands high in it's beautiful grounds
The Dungeons go deep down you'll hear echos of sound
There's Endless things to do
And Friendly the Nottingham people are to you
Oh the Gardens, plenty of colourful flowers to see
The House of the Council a feature of our city
There's Industries closed but Boots has stayed
It's Just lovely to walk under the Exchange Arcade
Kings Walk, Queens Walk not far from town
The Lace Market and lace hall, old buildings still around
We have Many stars and actors, artists, writers, skaters
Talents you can't wait to see
So Nottingham's the place where I like to be
There's Our Cineworld and Broadway Cinemas
with lots of films to view
The Playhouse is great and the Showcase to travel to
We have the Queens Medical, City Hospital Campus
Sherwood and Highbury all well known
And our Robin Hood our Hero is a Legend on his own
Our famous Square the centre of our city
"Down Town's the place to go"
Theatre Royal Concert Hall, ‘It's good to see a show'
We've got the ice rink, Universities, colleges, schools
You can choose one class or another
There's Victoria Centre and Broadmarsh
All shops under cover
Wollaton Hall,Trent Bridge, Attenborough
with ducks (there's a lot)
Xmas time it's great to see Santa in the shops
You have to praise our Nottingham
Our city is the best
I've always loved this place
It also gives me Zest
There's many a place I do not name
But I think about them just the same
So come and visit by bus or train
Once you've been you'll come again
Nottingham------Queen of the Midlands
Long may our city reign !

There's lots of new people on the St Ann's site
Telling their stories from morning till night.
So many memories, of all the good times
Of outings and places, and old friends that we find
We went to school, parks, swimming baths.
We walked to and from Town,
There was shop after shop (not one saying pound)
You name it, we could buy it, If we had the money
We shared a halfpenny chew, only now it seems funny
Up and Down streets where different friends played
Entries, Terraces and Yard escapades.
You don't have to be rich, to have a good time
Laughing came easy, on your street or mine
We'd daydream about money and doing a job
What we'd buy mam, when we'd earned a few bob
Years quickly went by, I had hundreds of plans
I made them when I lived in St Ann's.
I always tried to do my best
Even retirement don't let me rest.
St Ann's Well Road pre demolition (1970) site
I look forward to new memories
When I'm browsing tonight
Wonderful memories make you laugh and cry
With happiness of those days gone by.
We can relive some of them
On the 1st of July........memories are made of this
Telling their stories from morning till night.

On the 1st of July........memories are made of this
SOME DREAMS ARE SO REAL
I dreamt I passed our old house, the place where I grew up
Mum was cooking in the kitchen, in my dream I stood and looked
Dad was in our little garden, he liked to keep it nice
Michaelmas daisies in abundance he'd grown them once or twice
Dinners on the table.....mum said in her happy voice
We ate it and enjoyed it, there was no second choice
There was my mum, dad, and sisters three
Our Sue, Elaine Vicki and me!
Dad nicknamed us the famous five
And we girls ...all spoilt him
Memories are so wonderful
If we could live them once again
Mum clears the plates from the table
Bread and butter pudding for our "sweet”
When the washing up was done,
We'd go and play out in the street
A ball is thrown at me, and landed on my head
Sadly my dream was over. I’ve just woke up in bed.
Today a lovely lady from the site "Susan Knight" she asked
“did I know John Knight from Westminster Street or Hazel Fryer?”
Sometimes it's hard when your thinking cap is on, but, I did remember the Fryers shop in a poem I'd got. It does mention a few shops on St Ann's Well Road, the only extra word I added was the name Hazel.
I often dream about all those shops
None of them have been forgot.
Pork Farms with those special pies,
Windows emptying before my eyes.
There was Shaw’s Wines and Spirits
then Frank Holmes, who sold Cycles
Bell's pumps and other bits.
Burtons Furnishers at one two two
George Hogg Butchers - I'm sure you all knew.
Maypole Dairy and the lad on his bike
Hopewells Limited, all that beautiful furniture
We all just looked at and liked
Leslie Fryer Fruiterer. and Greengrocer
With daughter “Hazel" at their lovely shop
Lymms Funeral directors - (scared me a lot)
Mrs Johnson’s boots and shoes
Marsdens, the Post Office - join the queues
Whitworths and Streckers, both selling Pork
Alec Millers machines opposite the school
It wasn't far to walk
Sharps Butchers, then Connie Humphreys
She worked at Central Market
I cross over to Norland Road - Dad's home in his Lorry
I've just seen him park it
He jerked it so that some coal could fall off
Neighbours come out with dustpan and brush
He pretends he doesn't see them
And tell me quietly to Shush !! Aww Happy Times.
It may not fully rhyme in parts - paper was faded.
----- 🎅 MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎅--
Another year's "gone by, so very fast"
On St Ann's Pre Demolition Site
We've all looked into the past
We've woken up memories
Of days gone by
Amazing stories and photographs
Can bring a tear to your eye.
Mams, Dads, relations, kids and friends
Once you've logged to the computer
You don't want the memories to end
How children played on streets and park
At marbles, skipping. or with homemade go carts
And we'd be swinging around the lamppost until it was dark.
There was School and seaside holidays
That we always looked forward to
Trent Bridge, Pleasure Park, Nottingham Castle
So happy to visit with friends, (one day or two)
Phone boxes. Cinemas, Central Market
Today's kids can't remember
That we had presents for birthdays
Then waited until December
December means Santa, what would he bring?
Nurse outfits/cowboy outfits/bikes, scooters
Annuals, fruit, chocolates and other things
We saved for a Christmas food hamper
With lots of special treats to live like Kings
Now I'd like to Thank "Tony and Mavis"
The site's wonderful Admin
It makes us happy, turning back the clock
And we're all grateful to the time they put in.
A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS
To everyone that contributes
Your memories we all can share
At the Gathering in July
We hope you will be there
Good Luck. Good Health
God Bless you All
When we start the New Year
I'll raise a glass to absent friends
And all you lovely folk on here xx
Beloved St Ann's Well Road Pre Demolition (1970)
To Everyone on the St Ann's Site
I will be thinking of you all tonight
When the clock starts to chime
I'll raise my glass and cheer.
To each and everyone of you
I wish "A HAPPY NEW YEAR”
We're grateful to Tony and Mavis
This Site continues to get stronger
And the list of members
Just grows longer and longer
Thanks to all who contribute
We can relive our dreams
With lots more memories
In Two Thousand & Seventeen
I'll end here
Lots of love from Jean x
Good Luck, Good Health and Happiness for 2017

Good Luck, Good Health and Happiness for 2017
when memories go back,as they often do.
I think of all the happy times in the St Anns Well Road I knew.
How we"d play in a crowd, and go to the park.
Play near the lamp post ,when it was dark.
Have a stick of rhubarb and sugar ,in a newspaper square.
Remember waiting for nit nurse ,to comb through your hair.
Remember Church outings and anniversary dos.
Posh new frocks and sandal shoes.
Knitted cardies and jumpers ,wool hats to keep warm.
Getting soaking wet when we had a storm.
Remember school dinners that miss made you eat.
Hands up for a second pudding ,a special treat.
Remember the pictures how we used to queue.
Watch the film twice ,use an indoor loo.
Remember the usherette who shone her torch.
Waiting for pals in entries or porch.
Chip shop on Fridays, for a sixpenny mix.
Your ice cream or sucker ,everyone had licks.
Fetching Mam a bundle of wood.Halfpenny chew if you was good.
Remember on buses you gave up your seat.
Carried bags for elders you"d meet ,running errands helping out.
No answering back or you"d get a clout.
Corner shops ,whips and tops ,Dolls and prams ,dads and mams .
Sharing toys ,girls and boys ,skipping songs fever grate pongs.
Bows and arrows ,guns and swords ,wooden clocks and long sideboards.
Lino on the floor and stairs,Northampton street for dancing .
walk there in pairs,....Fire guard and toasting fork .
Sunday dinners, crackling and pork,Bath night party night everything was fun .
Or did i wear rose coloured glasses ,When I was young.
I have lots of poems...... its the way i stored my memories.
I hope you like this one ....Jean

Poor old Frank the Xylophone man
Had a plastic tub for his money
In Nottingham people treated him,
They thought he was very funny,
He did a service for little pay
And cheered the shoppers who came his way
His tunes were very similar
His arm would go to and fro
Other musicians came to town
"Dear Frank" let them know
Oh, I am the Xylophone Man
I never brag or boast
One day I'll make my mark
I'll be in the Nottingham Post
I'll have another tune
And a collection box I hope
I'll call it Pennies from Heaven
It could help homeless Nottingham folk
Start saving all those pennies
That you don't want in the bank
Put them in the Xylophone box
And remember Dear Old Frank
Had a plastic tub for his money
In Nottingham people treated him,
They thought he was very funny,
He did a service for little pay
