MEMBERS
Just to give you some background - (especially for the benefit of our newer site members) - as to how our St Ann's Well Road Pre 1970 site first started......I started the site nearly six years ago. late Dec. 2012. Facebook was a totally new experience for me.......I was getting fed up by the way Nottingham (especially St. Ann's) was being covered by the local & national press including Radio & TV....”Nottingham Gun City”...”Shottingham”...”St. Ann's murder, drugs, stabbings, no go area , totally unsafe etc. etc” it made me cringe...and insulted...all one sided...
I felt that there should be an opportunity to tell the true story of St. Ann's prior to the Nottingham City Councils Re-development, rehousing & demolition programme during the late 1969's early 1970's when 30,000 folks were re. housed......when it was just called St. Ann's Well Rd. with a superb and vibrant community, a safe place to live, good schools, numerous shops businesses & manufacturers, churches, libraries, and lots of people within the community developing & helping with young people within the community... Boy's Brigade, Life Boy's, Cub's, Guides, Youth clubs, Football Clubs.. etc. etc.
...........and so it began......and with the help of my son...."Dad, here you go again, banging on about the good old day's in St. Ann's how it used to be"........"but...how can I tell people?
"Dad...Why not start a Facebook Group site with some of your old mates”.......so that's what I did, three mates, my oldest & closest pals, from the age of four (1945) from Infant & Junior School (Board School & B.B........”Hi Boy’s what do you remember about St. Ann's before it was all knocked down in 1970, have you got any, pics stories, memories?"
...........and then very quickly it grew.....members who were born, played and grew up in St. Ann's, went to school within the area.... believe me every one has a story to tell, some are amazing, life changing & highly motivational...
After six months I needed some one to help me manage the site....'"HELP!!"....I noticed that our Mavis Baker, who was living in Sunny Perth Western Australia, also shared a passion about the old St. Ann's, - although she only used to live about 200 yards away (47 bus terminal) from where we used to live (facing The Board School.) I never knew her then.... similar age, but a bit younger than myself, a girl... .. Message: "Mavis can you help me develop the St. Ann’s FB site & become a joint administrator? “ That was in early 2012 with just 70 odd site members...thank goodness she YES! & accepted the terms & conditions of the job....no pay, long hours & no holidays ....the rest is history...and now we have more than 2000 members scattered across the globe....
I am greatly encouraged with what we are doing as a site....it is a super historical site, great for young people to look back at what life was like growing up in 1940’50’ 60’s following WW2 stories, photo’s & memories.
My personal motivation for the site is by telling folks all about what St. Ann’s was like before 1970 and that it will hopefully help to put a more credible, focussed & positive spin on St. Ann’s and it’s community for the future, particularly for the young people.
So folks “Thats the sizzle” now here’s “The Sausage”..........
So with regards to new members joining & contributing to our site.....The only way Mavis & I think that it really works, is if....how it started & was intended.......Three Simple Questions
1) * Were you born in the area Pre. 1970? yes or no
(2) *Provide a clear statement about your self (school, street, memories etc.) showing a strong connection pre. 1970 or other reason for wanting to join.
(3) *Your year (or decade) of birth.
Only members can make comments & contribute... It is a Public site...anybody on the world wide web (WWW) can view it.......
I am now off my soap box and the sermon has finished.....go forth & spread the good word of St. Ann's Well Rd. Pre. Demolition(1970)...
Best Wishes Tony & Mavis....
