MEMBER WALKS
To quote one of our members:
"I think St Ann's was like a maze, people tended to only associate with people from a very small area and other parts were like foreign lands to them."
Here is the first member's walk...one posted in facebook by our own poet: Jean Taylor. Do check out her poems here

I didn't catch the bus today I needed to save what bit of money I had to spend, I fancied the walk
I went into Bath street park, took a look and a moment of respect at Bendigo’s grave. its Saturday morning 1966, I'm only 15 - it's going to be Mother’s day on Sunday so I am meeting my cousin Susan, she's walking from Ipswich Circus Sneinton Dale - she'll be here soon, I've passed the kids on the park, crossed over near Lymns Funeral parlour.
Robin Hood Street, Sneinton Market is so busy, Materials, Shoe's. Clothes, Fruit, Vegetables, Food, Sweets, Card's, Toys, Pots, Lino .carpets. Eggs, cheese, ornaments The list is endless, my Uncle Alf Morley is on the Veg Stall, he's just set up the apples and Oranges in Pyrimid tower's - it looks lovely .
I've spotted a few things I'd like to buy Mum, Susan arrived we both buy cards and presents, we cross over Bath street towards the Vine Inn (Pub ) Handlel street; it's the only pub in Nottingham with a side door, my grandma worked there 1938. It's one of the few survivors of the post war clearances 1868 ...
We walk up to Carlton road taking a look in other shops, we get to St Mathias Road - have a look in the Library, then continue to walk to Porchester Road. We walk so far and cross the bridge which will lead us to Thorney wood mount. Soon we are at the top of Donkey Hill. From where we are stood we have an amazing view we've walked around in a circle back onto St Ann's Well Road. Now we’ve got to sneak into our house on Norland Road making sure mum don't see her gift, we’ve had a wonderful time.

All those walks in the streets off
St Ann’s Well Road!
On (Norland Road) swinging on our gate
Out to play with all my mates, honest I just can’t wait
Off I go calling for friends, they all come out to play.
June Lowe, Sandra Ashton, Frances Newman
Linda “H” My sister Sue, and any other kids we knew.
Pauline Fedoriwskyj off( Edwin street)
Susan and Janet Icke, also Carol Shephard
Then on (Hungerhill Road ) Janet Watson,
Lynda Bamford and the Pottigers
Carol Butlin my first friend from (Jackson street,)
She’s Iovely I’ve never forgotten her😊
Freda Polly Jean and Sandie Gilvear ,also Dot and Sue
Doris Foster, Joan and Margaret Farmer.
All on the next street (Lotus)
Our list of friends just grew!
Jane and Maureen Sands off (Beverley Street)
Oh and Maureen Murray, babysitting with a friend
At Trudy Drew’s, I can remember blonde Eileen too!
(Twells Street) Zerenah Khan, Jessie Thomson
Helena Daykin at the Hairdressers on (Wells Road)
This is only mentioning a few.
There’s lots in your memory, I’m sure you already knew!
If you don’t see your name, it’s because I’m growing old.
In my mind’s eye I see you all, like all the Seerey /Voces
For my pal Colleen I would call, 😊
we all know Colleen Pilgrim, who lived near Sycamore Rec.
We played on Coppice rec and King Edward park
In the streets and back yards, until it was dark 🌛
We walked everywhere around St Ann’s
all friends together, not a care in the world
We were out in all weathers
Over (Donkey Hill) looking back at the views
Friends that I walked with I still see
Sadly some have passed on, but their memories
Live on in me 🌹
We were all blessed with special friends
We would always laugh and talk .
Up and Down ST ANN’S WELL ROAD
Was a brilliant place to walk.

My Mams Monday walk 1959
I hope you don't mind me telling another tale .
It was Monday morning, Pram packed without fail
Marching down St Ann's Well Road" Clothes piled high"
pushing the pram up to Bath street wash house
To wash , Iron , and dry !
Crossing Bath street after an hard days graft
A crowd of ladies in turbans ,all having a laugh ,
A line of children pass from St Ann's Board School
For Monday morning Swimming lesson in the Oval pool
Bluebell Hill beckons, Mams got and errand first
It was on St Mathias road ,to see a nurse
Rose Hill clinic ,mam wanted to know
Could they give anything, for a thumb wicklow !
Then getting home to Norland, unloading the pram.
Then off out again as fast as she can
Up Pym street,to collect some Lace work in a sheet
To deliver to mrs Simmonds on Crown street .
Walking back ,a friend to meet
They have a natter ,at the top of Bombay street .
Molly was the lady's name ,she lived on Belle vue
She had a daughter my age ,her name was Sue .
Home at last, it's been a busy day
Kids will be home at half past three
Thank goodness for Sunday left overs ,
it's bubble and squeak for tea .
The children coming out of the School entrances
On streets Duncombe and Edwin
They are ready to tell how their day as been .
They all go home ,to where they live
There's so many streets off St Ann's Well Road
For Mam ,just one day of chores
From our humble abode ,This tale
Started then ended, "back at Norland road "
I hope you don't mind me telling another tale .

Polly Sumpton That marvellous Jean, must have just missed you too. I've got a ten Bob note to buy a few bits for mum.....we too did the walk through Bath St just to check on poor old Bendigo before going to Sneinton Market! Hustle and bustle and lots of shouting "who will buy my wares, sold to the lady with her leg in the air"...squealing with delight at the very thought. Bought some basins for her puddings and then onto the Smells Counter to find some bath cubes or salts.....my the things you can get for your money!! Didn't stop there then went on to Bath St Park and had a go on the fabulous swings with my sister going higher and higher till we couldn't get any higher....then cutting through all the back streets onto St. Ann's Well Rd onto the Chase and up onto Caroline Street turning right onto Abbotsford Drive and then cutting thro to Manning St before ending on Damie. Wish I could have gone with you Jean, but you are a big girl and big girls can go on bigger adventures. Thanks for the virtual walk, again maybe next time Jean! 😍
Jean Taylor Wish I'd have gone with you Polly ,Big girls like swings 😊
Bath cubes and bath salts , got bath cubes for mum also two hankies with her initial on , I enjoyed your walk ,see you next time ,Polly x
Anita Tomlin Love these walks please do more xx
Mavis Baker Group admin ..still more anecdotes I am sure.... I'd forgotten Lyms was on the road...
David West Mavis, I think St. Ann's was like a maze, people tended to only associate with people from a very small area and other parts were like foreign lands to them. I am a complete illiterate when it comes to this kind of thing but I wish you luck with your endeavours.
Mavis Baker Group admin Absolutely like a maze. I knew St Anns Well Rd itself as I lived at the top and travelled into the city along it...hardly diverting apart from going up Donkey hill to Pierrepont...and visiting relatives and friends close by (Cromer Rd, Chandos St St Anns Valley, Lotus St...always wary of Westminster St and Twells St!) ... Bath St ...only reason to travel up that road was to the markets and to the swimming baths from school (but that memory is very faint)
