MORLEY SECONDARY MODERN SCHOOL

Picture
Picture
Picture
A little bit of history which I picked up from the library:
  • Morley School was opened in 1922 as a senior school for boy's & girls.
  • It changed over to a Secondary Modern School in 1944.
  • In 1966 the senior children transferred to the new Elliott Durham School on Ransom Rd and the old Junior school (Board School) closed down moved up to Morley on Wells Rd and was then called The St Ann's Junior School.
I attended Morley Sec. Mod. School from 1952-56 and left when I was 15. In our final year inn class 4A Miss (Polly) Brown was our English and form teacher, she called us her top notches... she must have been quite elderly at the time and must have taught English for many years at Morley....because she also taught both my Dad & Uncle Ron English in approx 1926......I was also told that in the same class as my Dad was Eric Stapleton, who later went on to be a very famous Dance Band Leader & Broadcaster.

1952 Tony-Ann Miller Class of 1A Morley School circa.1952. Julia, your Brother Terry Nixon, is sitting cross legged on the left of me, I am on the front row right at the end on the right. Mick Bonser is in the centre of the front row, and Dave Farrell is standing at the end of the third row...he always was one of the tallest boys in the class. Interesting that we all look a lot happier and carefree in our first year on the '52 photo compared to a more serious class on the 1956 picture in our final year...is this all part of growing up....I ask myself.....

1952 Tony Miller .......and this was the class of 1A 1952 and in our first year at Morley Secondary Modern School when we were all about 11 years of age.....with Mr. Hollingworth as our Headmaster, and Polly Barker as our English Teacher and later as our class 4A Form Teacher...she used to call us her TN's her top notches....the notches at the top of the tallest trees...yes 60 years ago.....and I still remember all the members of our class very well.....as if it was yesterday. Unfortunately one or two of them are no longer with us....However...nowadays.... I can open the fridge door and stare inside for a couple of minutes...and wonder what I originally opened the door for....does that ring a bell folks? I guess it's the mystery of life....

1952/53 This picture was taken at Morley School when it was a senior school in the year roughly about 1952/3. My dad, Maurice Thackray is in the middle of the 2nd row and I don't know who was on the other half of this picture as I do not have it. If anyone has the full pic or the other half or can tell me any more information on the people I would be really grateful. Tina Hall

In April 1991 I along with Jill Bartle,( I contacted the boy's and Jill did the girls) arranged a class reunion for the Class of 4A 1952/56 as most of had hit the magic 50...yes it was 20+ years ago. We had a great attendance with most of the class attending along with one or two teachers from our past...I invited our old Headmaster Mr. Hollingwoth who we hadn't seen since leaving Morley School when we were all 15 years of age. As you can see he retired to live in Sutton on Sea near Mablethorpe. I spoke to him by phone and he apologised for not being able to attend our reunion. A few days later I received this rather nice letter from him...amazing now and reading it again. He would have been about the same age as myself now...playing golf about three day's a week, as I do myself.... and playing off the same ever increasing Handicap 20 as myself. He sounded to be a very nice old gentlemen....and just to think..... I was always very frightened of him...the strap etc...see me in my office boy...Just look at the handwriting...superb the way we were all tough to write by our beloved English Teacher Miss "Polly" Barker. It's just a nice doccument to have with in our Morley School historical file. ..Tony Miller

1991 REUNION
  • MORLEY 2008 - LAST DAY    Tony Miller:  Morley School had an open day for all old pupils just prior to it closing down for good as a school on 3/7/2008 and re-locating to a new site. It was a very interesting day for all of us...as most of us had not set foot in the school for over 50 yrs  since leaving at 15 y.o.a. and going out to work.
