COOKE, William George

Cemetery: BARLIN COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION Family History At the time he attested in Canada he gave his next of kin as his father, William J Cooke, of 61 Westville Street, Nottingham. William emigrated to Canada in 1913, sponsored by Oliver Hind's juvenile emigration scheme, where he would have spent time at Dakeyne's Farm, Nova Scotia, where he would have been taught agricultural skills. Employment/Hobbies Member of 2nd Nottingham Company Boys' Brigade (Dakeyne Street Lads' Club). Sailed to Canada, onboard the SS Virginian out of Liverpool, arriving Nova Scotia 18 April 1913 in a group of 12 including James Weatherbed, another Dako Boy. His trade at the time of enlistment was that of clerk. Military History A photograph exists of William in the uniform of the Canadian Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). He attested in Montreal on 9 August 1915 and sailed to England onboard SS Adriatic from Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 31 March 1916, arriving in England on 10 April 1916. He was promoted to corporal on 19 May 1916. The unit embarked for France on 12 August 1916 and disembarked at Le Havre the following day. He was dangerously wounded on 17 March 1917 and died in a casualty clearing station in Rouen the next day. He was buried in Barlin Communal Cemetery Extension (grave ref I.G.22). Qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal. Extra Information Nottingham Post obituary (abridged), 20 March 1917: 'Cooke. died of wounds March 18th. Corporal William George Cooke, Canadian Highlanders.' Nottingham Post obituary (abridged), 2 May 1917: 'Corporal WG Cooke (Canadians), 51 Westville Street, Nottingham, died of wounds March 18th aged 20.' [Westville Street was his father's address] William is commemorated on a memorial in the church of Christ Church at Windsor, Nova Scotia; nine members of the congregation died in the war. In summer 1913 he married Louie Drabble and she later lived at 155 Franchise Terrace Westminster Street Nottingham. Employment/Hobbies He was a collier. EVERSLEY, GEORGE ALBERT

Memorial: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL Family History He was born in 1895 the son of Albert Eversley, a chair maker. He had two siblings, Charles and Jane. In 1911 his father, a widower, lived with his three children, George Albert (15), Charles (14) and Jane (11) at 27 West Ville Street, Nottingham. Also in the household was the children's uncle, Albert's older brother, Thomas (41). Employment/Hobbies In 1911 he was apprenticed to a smith. SLATER, William Henry
Rank Private Service number 52230 Date of death 07 Oct 1917 Age at death 35 Family History He was the stepson of George Hallam and the brother of Sarah Jane and Ethel Faith Slater. In 1911 they lived at 51 Westville Street St Ann's Nottingham. He was the husband of Nellie (née Parker) Slater of 49 Westville Street. He was the father of William Parker. Employment/Hobbies He was a stableman in 1911. Military Unit 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) Military History William Henry Slater went to theatre (France) after 1 January 1916 and only served with the 9th battalion. The battalion attacked Poelcappelle Belgium on 4 October 1917 and successfully took all of its objectives. It was though at high cost with over 100 killed and 200 wounded. William was moved to the Casualty Clearing Station at Dozinghem and died there three days later. He is buried in the cemetery which was next to the CCS -DOZINGHEM MILITARY CEMETERY , grave VII.
