CRONK, FREDERICK WILLIAM MALLARD
Rank: Private Service No: 6610 Date of Death: 21/11/1916 Age: 29 Regiment/Service: 8th (King's Royal Irish) Hussars Grave Reference: 4224 Cemetery: NOTTINGHAM GENERAL CEMETERY Additional Information: Husband of R. M. Cronk, of 308, St. Ann's Well Rd., Nottingham. Family History Although the name Frederick James Cronk appears on the West Drayton memorial, it is almost certain to be Frederick William Mallard Cronk, the son of James Mallard Cronk and his wife Annie (nee Warner). The couple had married in Hampstead and produced four children, Florence Louisa Cronk 1877, James Mallard Cronk 1883, Thomas Mallard Cronk 1885 and, Frederick William Mallard Cronk 1887. James senior was employed as a railway guard for the GNR. They moved to Nottingham around 1880 living in Sneinton where their last two boys were born. For reasons unknown, when it came to the census, the surname of Cronk was dropped and was replaced by Mallard. When Frederick married in 1912 to Ruby M Stead at Retford, Frederick used his name of Cronk as did he when he named his child, Frederick J Cronk in 1913. At the time of his death Ruby was living at 308, St. Ann's Well Rd., Nottingham. Military History Frederick Cronk enlisted at Nottingham and was drafted to France on the 7th October 1914. He was repatriated to the UK as he died in the Military Hospital at Tooting and was buried at Nottingham General Cemetery Remembered on

Toseland Joseph
The other day I posted a photo showing a war grave of the Sherwood Forester soldier named Joseph Toseland who was born and lived in St Ann's other than his 13 years in the Regiment including his active service in the Boer War in 1901. Sadly he died whilst training for departure to France in WWI in 1916 aged 48. I have now done some more digging on his family and it makes a very revealing story about life in St Ann's as it developed in the late Victorian era. Steve Clark |
