He was killed in action 8th May having taken part in the Gallipoli landing 25th April 1915

I am the officer in charge of the platoon to which your son was attached and I have known him ever since he left Australia and was a Pte in the same tent with him at Tel-el-Kebir. On the night of the 2nd the Coy Lewis Gunners were detailed to act as a covering party in front of our trench and on the way out your son was sniped through the head and was killed instantly, his death was absolutely painless and he would not know anything about it....'

Harry departed London for Melbourne, Australia, on board SS Geelong (P&O) on 28 August 1913. The passenger list gives his age as 18 and trade as 'lace worker'. His brother, William, also served in the war.

Horace NewsteadNottingham-born Sgt. Horace Newstead, 32nd Battalion Australian Imperial Force, was wounded at Fromelles on 19th July 1916.
The former sleeper hewer was the son of Eliza Ann Newstead, of 70 Dame Agnes Street, St. Ann's, Nottingham. He had enlisted at Blackboy Hill, Western Australia, on 19th May 1915.
He was wounded in action again on 28th September 1917.
