He was reported missing after the first day of the Battle of the Somme but his death was not confirmed until the following year. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 18 June 1917: 'Corbett. Missing since July 1st, now reported killed, Private Charles Corbett, Sherwood Foresters, age 19, late of 14 Virginia Street. Mother, father, brother, sister and Will in France.'
