- Saturday kids cinema at Cavendish. Cartoon cinema old Elite cinema.
- Mace shop on Harlaxton St. Beer off opposite and one on corner at end. Chip shop corner to Alf Rd N.
- chips out newspaper, penny tray at local shop 4 fruit salad or black jacks, everlasting strips elastic toffee, sherbet fountains. Lucky bags, Mmmmmm
- ..Dustbin Men used to collect bins from entrys and put them back again, carried on their backs, we had regular called Dug who had cap full of badges.
- Insurance, Rent collectors, milkmen, popmen, coalmen on the streets.
- The cold outside toilet lagged against freezing up. sharing a bedroom with my sister and gran. Coal fire, getting un/dressed in front of, if I could. Our cellar, cold musty with old marble slab to keep food cold. Our attic, hated the stairs, was scared to go up there, my dads work room full of woodworking benches and tools. Our third bedroom was a bathroom my dad put in. Had a boiler but we shared the hot water after someone.
- Collecting shillings for the metre, I loved feeding it and sometimes running out and finding torch to top it up.
- Kids being picked up for Sunday school by 'pied pipers' who helped get the crowd safely to church. Running errands for neighbours, usually for fags with a note and being given a penny or two for going. Old lady had regular jug of ale from Zetland Arms Welbeck St/ Church St. Playing out, knocking for friends being shouted in or fetched (someone else's errand). Knowing nearly everyone on our street and able to see up and down it. Best town planning, simple and safer.
- Making Guys to get a few pennys, going out to find a local street bonfire.
- walking to Elms school using lace factory yard as short cut (ignoring warnings, until I had bucket of water thrown). Happy memories of playmates, freedom, sweeties, black and white tv and test card music. Helping neighbours. Our houses should have been refurbed they were good ones.
