Vicarage St
off Alfred St North
Vicarage Street - hooray! This is Vicarage Street in 1953. Me and my sister outside our house at No.12 having just returned home from a Sunday afternoon stroll on the Arboretum. In the distance are the trees surrounding the reservoir at the top of Elm Avenue. Closer to the camera is the white end wall of the Mechanics Arms at the bottom of the street, on the corner with Alfred St North. There's a lady on the doorstep of either No. 20/22/24/26 (families Roome, Hose, Deane, Old, respectively acc. to the Weebly site record for 1956) so maybe other members might make a family connection? Further along you can just make out the junction with Church St, which ran downhill to become Harlaxton St before reaching Woodborough Rd.
I'm struck by the width of the street with such wide pavements and the fact that there's a car parked up - I don't remember any cars at all on the street. You can also see the gratings where the coalman made his deliveries into the cellars of these houses. ..Terry Sleaford
