Me and our dog Toffee Miller (what a dog) taken in our back yard, interesting to see our tin bath on the wall and the mangle under the window
14 Feb 2012
Just to clarify.... It is intended for memories of St Ann's Well Rd. Pre. Demolition 1940s 50s 60s up to 1970. When The Board School, was St. Ann's Well Rd. Junior School, for 5/11 year old's and Morley School was still a Secondary Modern school for children 11 - 15 Y.O.A. the old St Ann's Church was still open and vibrant, and all of the shops, pubs, and other business up and down St. Ann's were all still trading and extremely busy, and we still had the fabulous trolley bus's..
And I thought " Nostalgia was a thing of the past....." Bum...Bum... really pleased to see how our site is developing, it is so very interesting and worthwhile...the pictures that we are receiving from all over the Globe are fantastic...just keep them coming in along with the year they were taken if possible, and along with your own personal memory...

Coppice Rec. playing football with my old school mate "Geggy" Brian Guest ex Norland Rd. approx. 1954. Brian was a very good sportsman...Cricket, Football, you name it he could play it and he usually was the "Goalie" so at least he kept warm... Don't ask me why I have got a tie on...happy times... "Up on the Rec."

Class of 1A Morley School circa.1952. Julia, your Brother Terry Nixon, is sitting cross legged on the left of me, I am on the front row right at the end on the right. Mick Bonser is in the centre of the front row, and Dave Farrell is standing at the end of the third row...he always was one of the tallest boys in the class. Interesting that we all look a lot happier and carefree in our first year on the '52 photo compared to a more serious class on the 1956 picture in our final year...is this all part of growing up....I ask myself.....

As you know we have special awards for both individuals "Unsung Heroes" Teachers, Youth workers, Football Team managers etc....and for Buildings, "Blue Plaque Award" Shops, pubs, Schools....When you nominate someone or somewhere, just put a short personal comment on why. you can also add your comments to one of the awards that have already been recognised. Mavis has kindly agreed to list them and up date the information as it comes in.... eventually we will have an extremely interesting historical gallery of some fab people and shops on Senty prior to the demolition...so please contribute...it only takes a minute....for some people that gave us all years of happiness and inspiration....and the buildings that also gave us years of pleasure and enjoyment. Cheers M'Ducks.....Tony.

Dear All....Now that the site has grown to 100+ members, in just six months since I originally launched it in December 2011, I thought it appropriate to clarify the site’s main objective, for both our existing and our more recent members.
The main object of the site, is to celebrate what we had and where we grew up with in the St. Ann’s Well Rd area prior to its Demolition late 1960s /1970. The memories photos and documents should reflect the area when it was a dynamic thriving community, Shops, Schools, Churches, the people, buildings and unique characters of St. Ann’s which made it what it was..... and how we used to live and work in the area. In particular our photographs should be of that period and before, so that we can all see how St Ann's developed and evolved from an historical point of view, otherwise we will be overloaded with numerous photos of St. Ann’s in more recent years, which are not really relevant and a major task to catalogue. Even some pics, of streets partly demolished and boarded up... I personally find a bit upsetting...
I like to cling on to the very "Happy Times" and memories of living in St. Ann's Prior to the Demolition........Trust the above helps to clarify the direction Mavis and I, would like our "Super Senty Site" to follow....... Cheers M'Duck's Tony.

A very interesting subject....already we are starting receive some fascinating personal stories of the young men from St. Ann’s that served in WW1. As Mavis indicated, another drastic effect of the demolition in 1969/70 was that most of the churches in St. Ann's were knocked down....and no doubt all of them had remembrance areas inside, plaques, records, list of names etc... all no doubt lost along the way, and what a terrible shame...
It would be so interesting if one could create a list of the young men of St. Ann’s who were lost in WW1....Which Street they came from? what age were they, when they were taken? and what job did they do for a living, before they enlisted? photographs in uniform.... It would be a very interesting & fascinating document and create such a visual picture of St. Ann’s during this terrible time...... especially when you consider that it will be 100 years since WW1 started in a couple of years’ time 2014.........Food for thought.....
** this became the WW1 Centennial Project full story here

Picture taken early 60's with Tony (Symon) & Pam Symington and my wife Ann. I think it was taken at Sandra's wedding sister of Malcolm Burns. Just love the fashion of the 60's collars from Syd Plunkets very narrow ties with a very small knot. Pam looked just like Jackie Kennedy at the time...got a feeling that it was taken just before President Kennedy was assassinated in in 1963.

ST ANNS GATHERING.
From the moment I set my foot in Stonebridge City Farm.
I couldn’t believe what I saw.
Roy, Beryl and Brenda Morris, greeting us at door,
Tony and Ann were busy, organizing photos on the boards.
Angie Miles set out a table, with prints of her paintings (you could afford)
Name stickers got us chatting, There was photos everywhere.
I had to pinch myself......was I really there
Sid Wheeldon was sorting the raffle, with Kath and Mary.
When just at that moment, I saw Pat Seery,
Her brothers Cyril and Terry and the lovely girls.
All of these people, my mind was in a whirl.
Mavis Baker surprised by her Presentation,
With her Husband John -here for the celebration,
They planted a rose bush....with St Anns Pride.
When the afternoon was over, I could have cried,
Not with sadness that the time had gone,
But for TONY MILLER he’s second to none.
Because when I saw him with his Plaque.
I wanted to pat him on the back,
And say dear Tony......you have so many fans.
We have something in common,
We are all from ST ANNS!!

A Statement from Joint Administrators (Tony Miller and Mavis Baker)
???? Unsure about what this site is about, how it got started, what the general guidelines might be for sharing on this site? We hope that this statement by the administrators will answer most of your questions or clear up any ambiguity. With an ever-expanding membership (now 781) it is timely for us to ensure that everyone is in happy accord ....Once you have read the statement...you might wish to 'like'
St. Ann’s Well Road Pre. Demolition (1970) Online Community
The main objective of the site:
The site is about celebrating what we had, where we grew up and the people and places that were part of our lives.
• This site is: none political, racists, or sexist, no offensive language etc... no advertising.
• The site reflects the St Ann’s Well Rd area prior to the great demolition 1970.
• Our members share photographs, documents, historical information and poems, along with all of their personal memories of growing up in the St. Ann's Well Rd area prior to the demolition in 1970. The City of Nottingham is also encouraged because that's where we perhaps went to work, go shopping and where we socialized.
• All stories, photographs, etc should be relevant to the period prior to 1970 so that we can all see how the area we knew developed and evolved from an historical point of view. (The demolition stage with boarded up, part demolished streets are discouraged – these can be seen onhttp://www.picturethepast.org.uk/ site if members wish to look at them). If we start posting post 1970’s images (of which there are potentially hundreds) our site could get swamped with them – far better to track down those rare snaps in black and white either online or in the family archives!
• The memories, photos and documents should thus reflect the area when it was a dynamic thriving community, (Shops, Schools , Churches, the people, buildings and unique characters which made it what it was) - and how we used to live and work in the area.
31st December 2011 – Our St. Ann’s Well Road Pre. Demolition (1970) Online Community Facebook site was founded by Tony Miller, with three friends and one photograph. Soon seven people -all ex-St Ann's Well Rd who were born about the same time and who lived mostly in the same area prior to the 1970 demolition - were active on the site.
Similar childhood memories including schools, churches, and youth organisations were shared. It is these memories to which the site was originally devoted, - Tony’s personal memories, our personal memories, our parents’ memories and the history of St. Ann's Well Rd prior to the demolition.
The ethos of the site was now being readily embraced by new members. Within the first year the site had grown to 136 members from all parts of the world.
1st March 2014 –
Our site, now with over 700 members, continues to thrive. Its pictures, documents and memories of the old St. Ann's Well Road area are now stored for ever on the World Wide Web.
Our site has become a lasting testament to growing up in St. Ann's with its photographs, historical documents, maps and most importantly numerous personal memories of living in the St. Ann's Well Road area before the demolition.
Please continue to share your memories of living in St. Ann's prior to 1970 with photos of the time, documents and photographs, including photographs of Nottingham and its wonderful buildings....taken prior to the demolition 1970 and as far back as you want to go.

A "BIG" thank you... to Craig Cooke....for the loan of his 1956 Kelly's Directory...much appreciated by us all, especially our Mavis. This will enable me to scan & copy the names & numbers of residents during 1956 so that Mavis can then put them along-side her "Streets" & Photo's" section with in her superb sister site...check it out as it starts to develop, you will be amazed...When you take a closer look at the names & numbers on your particular street....they will all start to come back in your mind...all the different families that lived on "Your Street"...marvellous. Cheers Tony.

Hi. Folks. our Street.... "Names & Numbers" as previously advised Craig Cooke has kindly loaned me his copy of Kelly's Directory 1956. my priority is to support Mavis's photos with Street names and numbers on our sister site, so that they are properly documented...I have started with the main Streets on the left-hand side coming up S.A.W.Rd. and have now moved over on to the right-hand side...it's quite a long laborious job...scanning & cropping, but please give me time.... and I will eventually do as many as I possibly can....and other Streets, on personal request....never the less..It is a very exciting exercise when you start to see the names & numbers appearing on your very "Own Street" during 1956 and your own personal memories start to flood back .....Thanks’ for your patience.
Cheers Tony.

Hi. Folk's.....Apologies for clogging the site up at the moment with numerous Street name's & number's download's...it's quite a job.... but "I have a Dream" ....I am determined to down load every Road, Street, Avenue, Cottages, Terrace, etc, etc, with in St. Ann's so that our Mavis can then transfer them on to the Street Directory of our "Weebly Sister Site" so that we will have all the Streets with their very own page, names, numbers, pictures, photographs, Pub's, businesses, and individual memories... what a record that will eventually be to complement our "Super St. Ann's Well Rd Site"....so not long now folks....up to the LLLLL's.....so just a few more to go.......Cheers M'Duck's.....Tony.

Members of The Men's Institute of St. Ann's Church who lost their lives during the First World War 1914-18.
Quite an interesting St. Ann's story....during our St. Ann's Get Together earlier this year, I met Susan Dean (Day) who mentioned to me that whilst they were clearing out her garage for some building work, she came across a War Memorial from St. Ann's Church which had been stored there for many years covered in old blankets, she thought that I might be interested....a couple of day's later I called at Sue's to have a look at the board.....after carefully uncovering we found this lovely handmade War Memorial, illustrated with the names of eleven members of the Men's Institute of St. Ann's who lost their lives in the Great War. The commemorative board would originally, I think have been sited in Church or possibly in the Memorial Hall on Ransom Rd. Sue very kindly gave it me for safe keeping, subsequently I have cleaned it up and it is safely stored in my garage. Later I contacted St. Ann's Church regarding what we had found and felt the rightful place for it would be back in Church....disappointingly St. Ann's Church did not feel that they had the space to display it....So thanks to Sue Dean's care & diligence we can at least display on our site a fitting tribute to these very special gentlemen from St. Ann's who made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf. Never to be forgotten. Tony.

We needed to find a new home for this rescued and restored plaque - Tony found the new home for it at the current St Anns Community Centre that had been built on the site of the old church. The plaque was originally housed in The Cannon Lewis building on Ransom Rd. The WW1 memorials in the church were all disposed of at the time of the 'demolition'. FULL STORY HERE

Mr. Hollingworth our old Headmaster.
Just over 25 years ago Jill Bartle & myself organised a class reunion for the class of 4A (1956) Morley at The Friar Tuck Pub as we were all celebrating our 50th Birthday's at the time....a good night was had by all, we managed to track down the majority of the class including one or two of our old teachers. I eventually made contact with Mr. Hollingworth our old Headmaster by this time as you will read, he had retired, and as you will see I asked him to join us for the evening but he couldn't make it, he did however write to me and sent us £10 to put behind the bar, which I thought was rather nice....Smashing writing...just how Polly Barker taught us. I was always frightened to death of him, he strapped me on my first day at the age of 11 along with 25 + other kids for being late in the BIG HALL and if you ever were called in to his office then you knew that you were in for it....ouch...but I sure learnt the word of discipline. Memories eh.... Mr. Hollingworth our old Headmaster. Cheers Tony.

Sorting out some old stuff from the loft this morning and came across this letter from my Grandmother "Grandma Miller" R.I.P. in an old biscuit tin.....it was written to me on my 21st Birthday 55+ years ago when she would have been in her 70's it's a bit the worse for wear, never the less a priceless personal treasure...no doubt we all have certain old letters, including bundles of love letters...that we will never let go of, especially in these days of E/Mail & texted messages..... they are a thing of the past. Tony.

HOW OUR SITE FIRST STARTED
Hi. Folk's, Just to give you some background especially for the benefit of our newer site members as to how our St. Ann's site first started.....I started the site nearly 8 years ago in 2012...Facebook was a totally new experience for me.......I was starting to get really fed up by the way Nottingham especially St. Ann's was being covered by the local & national press including Radio & TV....”Nottingham Gun City”...”Shottingham”...”St. Ann's murder, drugs, stabbings, no go area , totally unsafe etc. etc” it made me cringe...and personally insulted...all one sided...I felt that there should be an opportunity to tell the true story of St. Ann's prior to the City Councils Re. development, rehousing & demolition programme during the late 1969's early 1970's when 30,000 folks were re. housed......when it was just called St. Ann's Well Rd. with a superb and vibrant community, a safe place to live, good schools, numerous shops businesses & manufacturers, churches, libraries, and lots of people with in the community developing & helping particularly with the young people with in the community... Boy's Brigade, Life Boy's, Cub's, Guides, Youth clubs, Football Clubs.. etc. etc. and so it began......and with the help of my son...."Dad, here you go again, banging on about the good old days in St. Ann's how it used to be"........"but...how can I tell people? "
Dad.......Why don't you Dad start a Facebook Group site with some of your old mates”.....Facebook?.....Mmm...so that's what I did, three mates, my oldest & closest pals, from the age of four (1945) from Infant & Junior School (Board School & The 6th Boy's Brigade........”Hi. Boy’s what do you remember about St. Ann's before it was all knocked down in 1970, have you got any, pic's stories, memories?........and then very quickly it grew.....members who were born, played and grew up in St. Ann's went to school with in the area.... believe me every one has a story to tell, some are amazing, sad, funny, life changing & highly motivational...after six months I needed someone to help me manage the site....help....
I noticed that our Mavis Baker, who was living in Sunny Perth Western Australia, also shared a passion about the old St. Ann's, although she only used to live about 200 yards away (47 bus terminal) from where we used to live (facing The Board School) I never knew her then.... similar age, but a bit younger than myself, a girl... .. message..... "Mavis, can you help me develop our St. Ann’s Facebook site & become a joint administrator?
“That was in early 2012 with just 70 odd site members...thank goodness she said YES! & accepted the terms & conditions of the job....no pay, long hours & no holidays, but interesting and good fun ....the rest is history...and now we have over 2000 members scattered across the globe. a superb 24 hour C.S.Dept.with offices in Mapperley & Perth.
I am greatly encouraged with what we are doing as a site....it is a super historical site, great for young people to look back at what life was like growing up in 1940’50’ 60’s & especially for the folk's that grew up in St. Ann's following WW2 stories, photo’s & especially the memories.....
Our site which continues to grow & develop......even Prince Harry, Torvell & Dean and Jaward Khaligs famous boxing club on Wood’bro Rd. St. Ann’s are all helping....along with Chantelle Stefanovic & the superb “Full Effect" programme in St. Ann’s...... by trying to put a more positive spin on St. Ann's & helping the young people with in the community.
My personal motivation for the site is by telling folks all about what St. Ann’s and it's community was like before the demolition & re.housing programme in 1970 and that it will hopefully help to put a more credible, focused & positive spin on St. Ann’s and it’s community for the future..... particularly for the young people.
So folks “Thats the sizzle” now here’s “The Sausage”..........So with regards to new members joining & contributing to our site.....The only way Mavis & I think that it really works, is if....how it started & was intended.......Four Simple Questions (1)* where you born or lived in St. Ann’s Pre. 1970? yes or no (2) *Provide a clear statement about yourself (school, street, memories etc.) showing a strong connection pre.1970 (3) * The years you lived in St. Ann's and (4) if you are a lady, presuming you are married, what was your Maiden name?
Only members can make comments & contribute... however......it is a Public site...and anybody on the WWW can view it.......Relax....I am now off my soap box and the sermon has finished.....so please.... go forth & spread the good word of St. Ann's Well Rd. Pre. Demolition (1970)...Best Wishes & Thank’s Tony & Mavis.....

Sycamore Girls School pictures
Hi. Folks,
How exciting is this....Rob Bird, our new site member of the “St. Ann’s Valley Centre” contacted me a couple of days ago..” Tony we have just come across three large Wall Muriel’s (56” x 20”) which have been in our stores for the past 40 years, they were originally created by pupils of the old Sycamore Girls School in the 1950’s/1960’s/70’s??? would you like them for your site? otherwise they could be destined for the tip” Yes, Yes, Yes,...came the reply I will collect them right away...and here they are safe & sound in “The Miller Art Gallery for St. Ann’s Treasures” what a find...they are...Fab-u-Lous works of art very modern abstract hand crafted pieces of tapestry, framed for display. There final years on public display were at the old St. Ann’s Library from when the old Sycamore school closed down during the great demolition of 1970... we remember it well! Now then you Sycamore “Old Girls” of that fabulous school, do you remember them? Were you involved in making them? either as an individual pupil or with in a class project? I would love to take some of the frame off the back to expose perhaps a name or perhaps a year when they were originally completed....it’s all a bit surreal & a bit like the “BBC Antique Road Show” so come on girls dying to read your comments...were you one of the girls? Cheers Tony. (PS I have just had to increase our house hold contents insurance by £30.000 to ensure they are adequately covered, but it’s well worth it folks)

Some “Great News” folk’s I recently delivered the superb old original Sycamore Girls School pictures, to the New Sycamore School off Abbotsford Drive in St. Ann’s, where they will eventually be hung & displayed somewhere within the school at the start of the new school term in September. Many thanks to all concerned in helping me, especially Susan Dawn, in finding a suitable final resting place for these superb works of Art which were originally made by the girls of Sycamore Girls School during circa 1950’s. Cheers Tony.

Our Brucie Lakin, has asked me to publish this lovely poem on our site, which conveys his personal feelings of living in St. Ann's Well Rd before the Demolition in 1970 in his very own unique style.....from the heart, no doubt as most of us all feel about our very own childhood memories. I think that it's timing is very appropriate in view of our forthcoming "Get together" at "The Greyfriars Social Club" on July 4th which promises to be a very special day.......Cheers Tony & "Thank You" Bruce.. . .
“No Place Like It On Earth”
St Ann’s Well Road Nottingham, there was no place like it on earth
If you weighed it in gold then that’s what it was worth
St Ann’s Well Board School is where we all met
Such good memories none of us ever want to forget
Morely School where we met our girlfriends, sometimes happy, sometimes sad
I remember the names of the girls and also the lads
We never want to let the St Ann’s history fade away
Monday, Tuesday or then any other day
Or all the famous streets on both side of this famous road
And we always helped the elderly to carry their load
There was a pub on each corner and we drank in all of them
But after eight pints one or two of us would fall
We went down on our knees but the we got up again
Went back in the pub to drink two more pints so that made it ten
But we were a great gang of lads, The Sennti Gang
Then it went rock and roll and all the songs we all sang
Elvis, Billy Fury, Little Richard, we remember them
The world was changing so the Senti lad started having a ball
As we came through the war years and some of us had it bad
My mother Hannah Larkin raised four boys on her own as we had no Dad
And we were not on our own, we were just in the queue
But we all stood there together as we gathered what to do
I want St Ann’s Well Road to go into the book of History
But I always wished it was a little nearer to the sea
If only we could bring Flo Wood back to serve us a drink
That sure would be good idea, well that’s what I think
To go to the Cavo or Empress Picture House afternoon or night
And then walk all the way home with no fear or of fright
I would sooner walk down Donkey Hill than up it I’m sure
As we Sennti lads have grown older sadly we are not young anymore
If you weighed it in gold that’s what it was worth
St Ann’s Well Road, there was no place like it on earth.
Bruce Lakin

PETER RICHARDSON'S BOOK
"END OF AN ERA"
"END OF AN ERA"
29th June 2019
Just in case anyone missed this earlier posting Re. Peter's book........Tony.
Hi. Folks, you will no doubt recall that Peter Richardson has been producing a book of some superb original St. Ann's photographs for publication during the demolition period, I am pleased to advise that the book has now been finally published & printed....I will bring along a Hardback copy of the book with me on Wednesday 3rd. July to our "Annual Get together" at The Greyfriars for you all to see.....you will no doubt find it very interesting........let Peter explain..... Cheers Tony.
This Book and Me (Peter Richardson)
While researching this book I have discovered that I have a family connection with St Ann's. Both of my grandparent's actually lived in St Ann's, on my mum's side my grandma Laura and granddad Harry lived in Bowers Avenue. On my dad's side my grandma Minnie and granddad William lived in Manning Street. I have very vivid and fond memories of all my visits to Bowers Avenue, which I loved, especially eating my grandma's sausage and tomatoes on toast. I clearly remember Manning Street, my other grandparent's home, an old terraced house, a short walk down Woodborough Road from Bowers Avenue.
I can't be exact in remembering the year I actually started taking photographs of the area of St Ann's but I believe it was around 1970 to 197I, when I first started studying photography at Derby College of Art. I do recall that during a summer vacation whilst at college I got a job as a labourer working for Wimpy, who were constructing the new St Ann's, and this may have been the catalyst to taking these photographs. This, together with a keen interest in our heritage made me realise the importance of capturing this period of time. This prompted me to collect what became quite a hoard of old tin signs, some the same as seen in these photographs. I stored them at my grandparents at Bowers Avenue but sadly they eventually got rid of them as I never took them away. At the time I really just liked the signs for the graphics and artwork, not realising what value they would eventually achieve.
I have now retired from professional photography and on revisiting these images thought it is time to do something with them. Hence the book. I hope they prove to be of both social and historical interest and are enjoyed for that reason.

Happy Memories of a coach day trip to our old 6th. Comp. St. Ann’s Annual Camp which used be held at “The Tower Farm” which was very close to the well-known land mark “The Water Tower”.
We had a fabulous nostalgic return to Mablethorpe where the Mayor of the town along with Town Crier, gave us old St. Ann’s B.B. boys a very Grand “Civic Reception” which was held very appropriately in a Fish &Chip Shop.

Hi. Folk’s,
A very nice story regarding one of our St. Ann’s site members, Susan Dawn.....
Susan fairly recently treated herself to a new HP Laptop P.C.
she noticed that unpacking the product it came along with a free £200.00 HP School voucher towards a HP software teaching product, Elaine immediately thought of her old St. Ann’s School “Sycamore” ...so she contacted Elaine Collins (Dept. Head) at the new Sycamore Academy Infant & Junior School on Hunger Hill Rd.
Elaine was delighted made contact with HP (Hewlett Packard) and redeemed the £200 voucher with a Teaching Aid Soft Ware product...which will be greatly appreciated by the school pupils.
Susan is an ex Pupil of the old Sycamore School on Sycamore Rd. ...
You might remember that Susan & myself were both involved in reuniting some lost works of art which were originally made by girls at her old school including Susan herself in the 1950’s they were superb hand stitched embroidery & very unique tapestries...which we donated & presented to the school on behalf of our St. Ann’s FB site.
(See attached pics)
Well done Susan for this extremely kind act of kindness towards the Sycamore Academy, it is I am sure greatly appreciated by us all.
Well Done! M’Duck

Research for ...The Promenade, Robin Hood Terrace, & Campbell Grove
Hi. Folk's, another extremely interesting project that Laura Summers has asked me if we could, as a site along with its members possibly help her with some research for ...The Promenade, Robin Hood Terrace, & Campbell Grove....I of course said "Yes Laura, I am sure we can help! particularly from some of our past & current residents who are members of our St. Ann's site".....so folks... please watch this space for further information.
Laura is already a member of our site & we have worked together on other very interesting St. Ann's projects in the past, so I already know that it will be a very worthwhile project to offer our assistance & help.
Cheers Tony (Admin)
"Hi,Tony,
Hope this finds you well. I just wanted to let you know about a project that will get going this spring. Nottm City Homes has been awarded a small grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to explore the history of The Promenade, Robin Hood Terrace and Campbell Grove. The project will work with volunteers to collect oral histories of the people that did, and do now live there. As you might know, grouping is listed and falls in a Conservation Area as they are important to the history of housing in Nottingham. Saved from demolition, we are now keen to tell the story of these houses and their inhabitants. We will be offering talks, tours and training in oral history recording. As a very active and passionate group I wondered if you wouldn’t mind sharing information as it comes out? We are just firming you the website, event dates and publicity now and this should be out in February. Please let me know if you’d be interested in being kept up to date. Kind regards Laura Summers"

Hi. Folks,
Due to the “Lock down” trying to take regular exercise we decided to walk in to Town instead of taking the usual bus...Mapperley Plains down to Vicky Centre...walking down Woodborough Rd. just before the old Sycamore Rd. now Hungerhill Rd. noticed a plaque on the wall of the recently beautifully restored “Lambley Almshouses”... they look very “Watson Fothergill” in their design pic attached....thank goodness they weren’t knocked down as well ...
We of course got the bus back home & reassuringly it was a number 47 ..a nice St. Ann’s touch
Tony & Ann.
(P.S. Mavis, can we include the picture of the plaque on our Hungerhill Weebly page & I will re. scan the numbers listing. When the Library is eventually open quite a few numbers are missing Xx)

Jean Taylor:
Tony Miller Admin & Beryl Morris were sad to announce
The Cancelation of the Gathering 😢
👍 The next will be in 2022 Wednesday 6th of July
🎵We’ll meet Again 🎵
Covid took us by surprise
Our Yearly Gatherings off again
But we still have this Fabulous site
Where our memories poignantly remain.
We talk about the old days
No Lockdown. We all had lots of fun
When lads played cowboys and Indians
With a bow and arrow or wooden gun.
Girls played with dolls & washing sets
Although most kids, played out in a crowd
So many falls bumps and grazes
Those games today are not allowed !!.
Now we are older, we only talk of them
And Our memories say ....Remember when 😊
We can still live on those memories that are so dear
So, Stay Safe. keep good health until next year
Covid May have cancelled (Our yearly Gathering Again )
But our love for those old times will always remain.
So keep the memories coming
Get your photos out of the tin
Schools. Parks. Pictures. Holidays. Friends
You’ll remember so much the list as no ends.
So we have to wait another year
To see friends Old and New
But for now St Ann’s Pre Demolition (1970)
Until next time.
We will chat from a distance .
And we will all be fine (Mi Duck )

A big thank you to all of your past and continuing efforts.
During recent times I have been in communication with a distant relative located in Texas and forward an extract from correspondence,
"My mother is really enjoying the St Ann's Well Road pre-demolition web site. She got quite emotional recently telling me how it has done a great job of bringing life to her father’s childhood. You cannot imagine how grateful she is for pointing her towards that resource. Mother, I believe is approaching 90 years of age lives in Scotland. Father, my mother’s uncle left 71 Norland Road to go to war, married and remained in London from 1919.
A big thank you, my best wishes to all group members, stay safe and keep well. Paul."

“HAPPY NEW YEAR” folks & Good Health to you & yours for 2022…and a
Very “HAPPY 10th BIRTHDAY” to our superb “St. Ann’s Well Rd. ( Pre. Demolition 1970) on line Community”
Something that I am immensely proud of …it started on 31/12/2019 with just three close friends who I grew up with…I guess on reflection it was a simple act of protest via. Facebook …a very new concept to me…a new world …as to how the local & national press seem to view “St. Ann’s” in Nottingham ….Shotingham…crime, drugs, knives & shooting…my personal memories of St. Ann’s we’re completely different to how the Press were portraying it…so I had to say something, instead of just Banging on about the good old days…extremely proud of …it started on 31/12/2019 with just three close friends who I grew up with…I guess on reflection it was just a simple act of protest via. We received this message from: Jackie Pearase –
Hello, I am the curator at the Enderby & District Museum in Enderby, British Columbia, Canada. I just received a writing box that was presented to a student or teacher from St. Ann's Well Road Evening School, Nottingham, from the Dressmaking Class in 1906. I am attaching a photo of the identifying stickers inside the box. The box was found among the detritus of an old house in Delta, BC. The box has no local significance for our museum but I thought your school might like to have it?
Note – After much hard work by Tony this was eventually donated to the Brewhouse Museum Nottingham - delivered personally by Tony (of course!)

Hi. Folk’s,
Yet another feast for your eyes from the late Peter Garner’s fabulous St. Ann’s collection of pictures taken before, during and after the Demolition. Please feel free to make comments on the individual pictures along with a possible location.
As promised, this is the 1st. number of pictures from the late “Peter Garner St. Ann’s collection” which were recently handed over to me.
Peter as a trained photographer with the old G. P. O. had the presence of mind to take a large collection of photographs of Ann’s prior, during & after the Demolition in the late 1960’s/ 70’s.
He was 90 (y. o. a.) when he passed away, I was lucky enough to have known Peter for quite a long time. He was born, lived & grew up on Bombay St. (just a few yards away from where I used to live) and always spoke with affection of his happy times living there before it was eventually all knocked down.
As I mentioned this is first release of quite a collection, several are already on our site which he let me have several years ago, but the rest are the first time I have ever seen them. Quite exciting eh. well here we go…. please add comments as to where you think the individual pictures were taken 1972 ish…the Street etc.
enjoy the memories.
Cheers Tony (Admin)
Hi. Folks,
You will no doubt recall my recent article regarding the late Peter Garner ex Bombay St. who very kindly left me a huge collection of photographs and slides which were taken in St. Ann’s during and after the Demolition in the late 1960’s / early 1970’s.
I am delighted to announce the launch of a specially designed Web site for this marvellous collection by our very own & extremely clever Mavis, which must have taken her many, many hours to design & construct.
I would also like to say a BIG THANK YOU! to Peter Richardson for all of his help with the numerous slide conversions and as a Professional Photographe, it is greatly appreciated, also special thanks to another site member, Paul Key for his extremely informative memories of Peter Garner as a personal friend and work colleague at the G. P. O.
Finally…..Enjoy this very special St. Ann’s Pre. Demolition (1970) Web site, devoted to the late Peter Garner. Cheers Tony.

Tony was able to find a permanent safe 'home' for Peter Garner's original slides with the Nottingham Archive office

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
Tony Miller has now stepped down as admin. Tony founded “St. Ann's Well Road Pre. Demolition (1970) Online Community Facebook Group with a few photos and three friends December 2011. I came on board as joint admin shortly thereafter. With Tony in Nottingham and myself in Australia, we have been overseeing/monitoring this group more or less round the clock for over 12 years.
Tony contacted me this week to say he feels the time has come for him to stand aside as admin and find someone to take over his role.
“Sure and Steadfast” is a phrase that comes to mind when trying to describe Tony’s steerage of this group. Tireless – resourceful – caring – diligent. Behind the scenes Tony has done so much -he is deserving of his own “Unsung Local Hero” blue plaque!
I am sure many of you will want to add your own words below.
“Thank you Tony” It’s been a great partnership. Fun and rewarding.
